Bringing New York the Best Comedy Since the ‘80s

Since New York Comedy Club’s founding in 1989, different locations, different owners, and different decades haven’t stopped this New York comedy scene staple. As the stand-up world continues to evolve, New York Comedy Club has followed suit—all the while staying true to its conception as a place dedicated to live comedy without the frills and serving up nothing but the best comedy shows in the city. Our venues continue to set the standard of what a comedy club should be, and the intimate showrooms capture the roar of the crowd nightly and provide an “anything can happen” feeling that only live comedy can provide and a popular backdrop for comedy specials. Acting as a career-launching pad for many of comedy’s biggest names, New York Comedy Club continues to be the spot to see the next big act, as well as the comics you know and love. And you never know who might pop in for a surprise guest spot!

The New York Comedy Club is now regarded as not only one of the top clubs in New York, but in the country. Opening its doors to a second location in the East Village in 2018, becoming the only comedy club in the country with two venues in the same city under one name. NYCC continues to be an integral part of the comedy world and produces the most popular and best comedy shows for comedy fans for decades to come.

Al Martin’s name is synonymous with comedy in New York City, and is responsible for launching the careers of many top comedians working today. Martin’s first venture in the comedy club business was in 1988 when he established the New York Comedy Club out of a need to help and showcase talented comedians. An accomplished comedian himself, Al was a National Headliner with numerous television credits such as The Joan Rivers Show, Geraldo and Evening At The Improv. Al was always more than just a comedian; he was an activist for the comedy community serving as Vice President of the Professional Comedians Association, and was instrumental in the organization dedicated to bringing health insurance and improving working conditions for comics. Although performing was a love for Martin he found his niche as a comedy club owner. He soon found himself helping his fellow comedians that he had once worked beside. Sarah Silverman, Lisa Lampanelli, Brett Butler, Tracy Morgan and Wanda Sykes are just a few comedians who have graced his stages over the years. New York Comedy Club became the first comedy club with two showrooms in 1997. Al was one of the first club owners to embrace diversity in the comedy world by establishing the first Latino Comedy Night at New York Comedy Club. He’s also facilitated and welcomed to his stage shows featuring gay, urban and Asian communities. In 2000 Martin opened New York Comedy Club in Boca Raton, which he ran successfully until late 2006. With the success of two clubs Al decided to expand his brand and in 2003 opened Broadway Comedy Club, located in the heart of Times Square. Martin again took a risk in opening Broadway Comedy, the only bi- level entertainment complex with three showrooms in NYC, serving over 600 comedy lovers from around the world nightly. In 2005 he partnered with Barry Katz, executive producer of NBC’s Last Comic Standing to run Boston Comedy Club, giving Martin the bragging rights to being the first person to run three comedy clubs in New York City. In the Summer of 2012 Martin expanded his comedy ventures into Greenwich Village, in New York City with the opening of Greenwich Village Comedy Club, from day one the club has been filled every night with a lively downtown crowd and top comedians making them laugh! Martin’s clubs attract comedy fans from around the world including some of the biggest celebrities from Jay-Z & Beyonce, Andre Aggasi, Jimmy Fallon, Montel Williams, and Harry Connick Jr. On stage or behind the scenes, Al Martin will go down in history as the King of New York Comedy. Martin is a brilliant thinker and innovator of his time, and has made New York City the World’s Capital of Comedy.

The Peoples Improv Theater is an award winning training center and comedy theater based in New York City.

        Mission

The PIT is dedicated to the instruction, performance, and development of original comedy. The PIT strives to entertain and educate the community about the comedic arts in a safe and nurturing environment.

The PIT is composed of three elements: a school that focuses on the craft of improvisation, an eclectic variety of electives, and an unparalleled professional writing program; a theater that presents original comedic shows seven nights a week; and a corporate and educational workshop program that offers team building, leadership, and business training.

        History

The Peoples Improv Theater was founded by Ali Reza Farahnakian in 2002, in a small blackbox theater located at 154 W29th Street.

After outgrowing its original home, The PIT moved to 123 E 24th Street on December 31, 2010, opening up the PIT Striker & PIT Underground theaters. In 2015 the original PIT theater on W29th St was renamed The PIT Loft and officially became the third theater at The PIT. In February 2021, the PIT announced the closure of its Flatiron location, leaving only The PIT Loft open in Manhattan.

At its new location on East 32nd Street between Park and Madison, The Cutting Room builds on a decade of history that includes some of today's top performers - John Mayer, Lady Gaga, Sting, Sheryl Crow and David Bowie are just some of the artists that have graced the stage of the Cutting Room at its previous location.

Created by original owner Steve Walter (Berklee Alumnus) and co-owner Chris Noth (Sex and the City, Law & Order, The Good Wife), the new Cutting Room continues the tradition of extraordinary performances and special moments, with a fresh new take on what a rock club & lounge should feel like. We are proud - and honored - to offer New York City a place to watch classy shows in a beautiful setting.

"We wanted a place where up and coming artists could get seen and established artists felt comfortable playing club gigs. We wanted a place with great sound, creative food and cocktails where the venue itself was as beautiful as the music." -Steve Walter, Owner

Whether you're looking to catch a great night of live music or just cozy up to a 30-foot guitar and grab a drink, we're here for you.
